PM Sharif on his toes as Imran Khans silence shakes up Pakistan. What do we know
Imran Khan health mystery: Unverified claims about Imran Khan’s health have set off political tremors across Pakistan. The unverified claims about Imran Khan's health have sparked protests outside prisons and courts. The reports around Imran Khan's health first started as whispers on social media and soon morphed into a crisis.
The reports ignited massive protests by PTI supporters demanding answers about Khan's health from the Sharif Govt. Previously, a disturbing, unverified medical report alleged that former PM Imran Khan was sexually assaulted while in custody. Currently, the tensions are on the rise in Rawalpindi especially outside Adiala Jail, where Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, are being held.
Several KPK ministers, including Sohail Afridi, are reportedly protesting outside Adiala Jail, demanding clarity on Khan's health. Reports suggest that the prison authorities are likely to allow Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, to meet him on Dec 2.
Earlier, Khan's sister expressed deep concerns about his well-being. Reports suggest that Khan's family met him & his wife on Oct 16, on the final day of their trial. Khan's other sister, Uzma Khan, last met him on October 28 and November 4.
Despite the ongoing rumours, the Govt's repeated denial of a prison meeting with Khan's family sparked protests. Apart from denying family meetings, absence of any recent photos or video proof of well-being, fuelled speculations.
Imran Khan served as Pakistan's prime minister from 2018 to 2022. Khan was ousted from office by a parliamentary vote. He has been imprisoned since August 2023 and is currently serving a 14-year sentence for corruption at Adila Jail.
Khan still enjoys strong support among large parts of the Pakistani public & claims that cases against him are politically motivated. Khan claims that the military is plotting against him to prevent his return to politics.Currently, Sharif govt is concerned about any leaked info about Khan's health that may trigger protests.
