New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old woman of Indian heritage has been raped in northern England. The UK Police have appealed to the common people to help them trace a white male suspect in the case.
On Saturday evening, the West Midlands Police was called to the Park Hall area of Walsall after a woman was in distress in the street. To trace the perpetrator, the police have released CCTV footage and appealed to the public for information on the man. The police are probing it “as a racially aggravated attack”.
According to Detective Superintendent (DS) Ronan Tyrer, who is overseeing the investigation for the West Midlands Police, “This was an absolutely appalling attack on a young woman, and we are doing absolutely everything we can to arrest the person responsible."
He added, “We have teams of officers recovering evidence and building a profile of the attacker so that he can be brought into custody as soon as possible. While we are following multiple lines of enquiry right now, it's vital that we get to hear from anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously in the area at the time." Also, he appealed to the public to help in the investigation by providing relevant information or CCTV footage.
As per the police, the attacker is white, in his 30s, with short hair, and wearing dark clothing when the attack took place. The local community groups have reportedly claimed that a Punjabi woman was attacked by the man. Notably, weeks earlier, a racially aggravated rape of a British Sikh woman took place in the nearby Oldbury area.
The police have undertaken an intense probe and are trying to recover CCTV camera footage. Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby of Walsall Police said, “Walsall is a diverse area, and we know the fear and concern that this awful attack will cause in our communities. We have been speaking to people in the community today to listen to and understand their concerns, and there will be an increased policing presence in the coming days."
Sikh Federation UK quoted local sources and said that a young Punjabi woman was attacked in the incident. It said, “The attacker apparently broke down the door of the house where she was living. West Midlands Police have now had two racially aggravated rapes of young women in their 20s in the last two months and urgently need to find those responsible."
