New Delhi: A senior Russian military officer was killed on Monday after a bomb planted under his car exploded in southern Moscow, according to a Reuters report said. Investigators believe the attack may be linked to Ukrainian special services.
Russia's Investigative Committee of Russia said it had opened a murder probe into the killing of Fanil Sarvarov, a lieutenant general who headed the army operational training directorate within the General Staff.
Russia's Investigative Committee of Russia said it had opened a murder probe into the killing of Fanil Sarvarov, a lieutenant general who headed the army operational training directorate within the General Staff.
According to reports, the explosive device detonated under a Kia Sorento driven by Sarvarov as he was leaving a parking space at around 6.55 am local time (0355 GMT). Sarvarov died of his injuries at the scene. The committee released a video showing the damaged vehicle, with blood visible on the driver's seat.
Officials said one of the lines of inquiry was whether the attack had been carried out by Ukrainian special services. There was no immediate response from Kyiv.
The killing comes amid a series of attacks targeting senior Russian military officials and pro-Kremlin figures since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Ukraine has been accused by Moscow of involvement in several such incidents inside Russia and in Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine.
In April, Yaroslav Moskalik, a deputy chief of the Russian General Staff, was killed in a car bomb attack near Moscow. In December 2024, Igor Kirillov, head of Russia's radiological, chemical and biological defence forces, was killed when a booby-trapped electric scooter exploded in Moscow, an attack later claimed by Ukraine's SBU security service.
Earlier attacks include the April 2023 killing of military blogger Maxim Fomin in a cafe bombing in Saint Petersburg, and the August 2022 car bomb attack that killed Daria Dugina, daughter of ultranationalist ideologue Alexander Dugin.
