New Delhi: At least six people lost their lives in a series of shootings reported across eastern Mississippi on Friday night, with authorities confirming that a suspect has been taken into custody, according to Reuters, citing local sources.
The fatal incidents occurred at three separate locations, WTVA reported. Clay County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Eddie Scott announced on social media that an arrest had been made and assured residents that the suspect “is in custody and no longer poses a threat to our community.”
While the sheriff did not disclose the precise number of victims in his initial statement, WTVA said six people were fatally shot. Scott later told the outlet that the shootings took place in and around West Point, a town close to the Alabama border.
“Multiple innocent lives were lost due to violence,” Scott said in a Facebook post, urging people to pray for the victims and their families. “Law enforcement is busy investigating and will release an update as soon as possible.”
Officials did not immediately provide further details early Saturday, and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office did not respond to requests for comment. Authorities said additional information would be shared at a scheduled news conference.
Clay County, situated in northeastern Mississippi, has a population of nearly 20,000.
The latest attack has revived memories of earlier mass shootings in the state. In October last year, Mississippi recorded at least three separate shooting incidents, reportedly linked to high school football games. One such attack in the northwestern city of Leland left six people dead and at least 12 others injured.
