New Delhi: The recent nomination of former US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlights the intricate diplomatic situation surrounding the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and broader regional peace initiatives.

The nomination, which was made at a White House meeting, emphasises how the Trump administration was instrumental in strengthening diplomatic ties between Israel and a number of Arab countries through the Abraham Accords.

Notably, the nomination was made at a time when Israel and Hamas were still having indirect talks on the Gaza crisis. Netanyahu's focus on providing the Palestinians with a "better future" raises the possibility of a change in strategy. Although specifics are still lacking, the mention of relocation possibilities and peace talks suggests a multipronged approach meant to bring about a permanent solution.

The idea of "free choice," as Netanyahu has put it, is giving Palestinians the freedom to move if they so choose, possibly to other nations that are prepared to help them resettle.
