New Delhi: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday said that his country was faced with a very difficult choice as the US was pushing to end the war with Russia. The President remarked that his country was at the risk of "losing its dignity" or "Washington's backing." The statement comes amidst plans by the US to end the Ukraine-Russia war, which accepts several demands of Russia and is favourable to them, and not Ukraine.
President Zelenskyy appealed to his countrymen to remain united and promised that he would never betray the country. He was speaking on the street outside his office. Aljazeera quoted him as saying, "Now is one of the most difficult moments of our history. Now Ukraine can face a very difficult choice - either losing dignity or risk losing a major partner."
He promised to fight tooth and nail so that "2 points" in the plan are not overlooked, which are, according to the President, "the dignity and freedom of Ukrainians."
Zelenskyy's statement comes amidst US President Donald Trump's 28 point proposal to end the war with Russia. The US leader has given him less than a week to accept the proposal and end the war with Russia. The plan to end the war, forwarded by US comes nearly 4 years after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
According to reports in the US media, Trump said that "next Thursday was an appropriate deadline for Ukraine to accept the deal."
Sources quoted by news agency Reuters said that US President Trump had threatened to cut weapons supplies and also stop sharing intelligence inputs with Ukraine, in case Zelenskyy disagrees to accept the proposal.
Reports said that the Peace proposal of Trump was more favourable for Russia, as it accepts many of their demands. The Russian demands which the proposal seems to endorse are that Ukraine cede more of its territory to them, curb the size of its military and also be barred from joining NATO.
The US proposal also says that sanctions imposed by western countries on Russia would be lifted and Russia would be reinstated in G8. The country was expelled from the grouping in 2014 after it seized Crimea.
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the proposal as a new version of what was discussed right before the Alaska Summit with Trump.
Meanwhile fighting continues in Ukraine, where its soldiers seem to be losing ground against the Russian forces. At least 31 people died and 94 others were injured in a Russian missile attack in the western city of Ternopil. The missile hit a residential building earlier this week.
