According to reports, parts of the Arabian desert witnessed snowfall on December 18 in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The unusual weather is attributed to low-pressure systems over the Middle East, which have brought heavy rainfall across the region over the past week.

Scenes of joy captured

People were mesmerised by the rare sight of snowfall in a desert landscape. Several photos and videos circulated on social media, capturing moments of awe and joy.

One such video shows snowfall transforming a vast desert into a white expanse, with a few camels visible in the distance.

A third video captures a layer of snow covering the highlands of Trougina.

Not the first time…

Gulf News quoted Saudi astronomer Mohammed bin Reddah Al Thaqafi, who said this was not the first time Saudi Arabia has experienced such chilling weather accompanied by cotton-like snowfall. According to Thaqafi, northern Saudi Arabia witnesses snow occasionally every winter, though the timing is irregular and driven by changing weather patterns rather than any fixed astronomical cycle.

He added that snowfall is most likely between December and February, particularly in regions such as Tabuk, Al Jouf, and Arar, which are influenced by Mediterranean weather systems. Areas including Jabal Al Lawz and other high-altitude zones in Tabuk, parts of Al Jouf and the Northern Borders, the mountain ranges of Hail, and the highlands of Abha in Asir are among the regions where snowfall is most commonly recorded.
