New Delhi: An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot dead a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday during a large-scale immigration enforcement campaign. The crackdown has been ordered by the Trump administration. The woman's death has ignited a political firestorm.

The federal officials are trying to defend the officer who opened fire at the woman. They contend that it was an act of self-defense. However, city and state leaders, backed by video footage circulating online, have contested that account, calling the shooting reckless, unnecessary, and avoidable.

Meanwhile, the deceased woman has been identified as Renee Nicole Good. She was shot and killed inside her vehicle on the morning of January 7. Good died only a few blocks from her home.

Who was Renee Nicole Good?

Renee was a recognised poet and a resident of Minneapolis. She studied creative writing at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. In 2020, while pursuing her studies there, Renee received the university’s undergraduate poetry prize for her poem “On Learning to Dissect Fetal Pigs.” Her poetry has been published in Metrosphere and Coronado Literary Review.

Renee describes herself as a “poet and writer and wife and mom and shitty guitar strummer from Colorado; experiencing Minneapolis, MN,” an Instagram account that apparently belongs to her said.

A mini-bio on the English Department’s Facebook page said that “When she is not writing, reading or talking about writing,” the post continued, “she has movie marathons and makes messy art.”

She was reportedly with her spouse at the time of the shooting incident. In videos shared after the shooting, a person can be heard screaming, “She’s my wife,” as people rushed to help Renee.

She was a mother of 3 kids

Renee was a mother of three children, as per court records mentioned by the Kansas City Star. In October 2023, she filed papers in Missouri to change her last name so it would match her partner’s. Her kids were 13, 10 and 3 years old then.

Donna Ganger, the woman's mother, was quoted as saying to the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter was probably terrified, and she was “not part of anything like that at all. Ganger was referring to protesters challenging ICE agents.

Her mother called her "one of the kindest people I’ve ever known". She said Renee was extremely compassionate and had taken care of people all her life. "She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”

Renee was shot in the face three times after she reportedly did not come out of the car when directed to do so by the ICE agents.
