Mamata Banerjee hails NITI Aayog report showing Bengal's strong performance in employment, sex ratio

The NITI Aayog report lauded West Bengal's strong performance across several socio-economic indicators. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee highlighted the state's low unemployment rate, significantly lower than the national average.

Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal has hailed the NITI Aayog report, which has 'officially recognised' the strong performance of the state across important socio-economic indicators, especially when it comes to employment. Notably, the Bengal government has been criticised by the Opposition in recent times for allegedly not generating enough employment.

CM Banerjee said the NITI Aayog has released a new summary report which shows Bengal's 'positive standing' in areas like literacy rate, sex ratio, life expectancy, and also quality of life.

She took to X and posted, "Pleased to share that NITI Aayog has officially recognised West Bengal's strong performance across key socio-economic indicators, most notably in employment. The state's annual unemployment rate for 2022-23 stood at just 2.2 per cent, which is 30 per cent lower than the national average of 3.2 per cent."

As per the report cited by Mamata, West Bengal's literacy rate is 76.3 per cent, while the national average is 73 per cent. She said, "The education outcomes are lower school dropout rates and higher pass percentages in classes 10 and 12 compared to national averages. The life expectancy in Bengal is 72.3 years (2020), higher than the national average."

Mamata said that Bengal's sex ratio is 973 female births per 1,000 male births, while the national average is 889. The infant mortality rate in the state in 2020 was 19 per 1,000 live births, and between 2019 and 2021, the total fertility rate was 1.6 children per woman, higher than national averages.

She said, "The report notes steady improvement, including higher-than-average household access to drinking water. These achievements reflect West Bengal's continued commitment to inclusive and sustainable development."
