Explained: How 2026 looks to fare for both major global conflicts, Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas?

New Delhi: The Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, 2023. The one between Russia and Ukraine, in effect, started in 2014 with Russia 's invasion of Crimea, but subsequent escalation into a full-fledged conflict started in 2022, making it the largest European conflict since World War II. Both the conflicts are some of the biggest global conflicts currently underway, hugely impacting both global politics and economy. While many attempts have been made to bring about some semblance of peace in both the conflicts, they have so far not fared well. One thing common in the current endeavours at peace making is US President Donald Trump, and it will be interesting to see how his attempts fare in the coming year. 2025: Year that global foreign policy, particularly that of the US, revolved around rare earth minerals

New Delhi: Foreign policy of different nations differs, and many variables are included in directing what each sees as pivotal aspects. Nonetheless some thematic commonalities sometimes do come about and often this comes due to one, often powerful, entity dictating terms by being intent on something particular. Others then have to follow suit. In the recent past, the US has often, if not outrightly dedicated, directed elements of global foreign policy. In 2025, the US has been intent on acquiring rare earth minerals, something which might seem benign but for the US has been a key element of their policy this year. While a big part of this comes as the US attempts to counter the Chinese hegemony of the minerals, the use of which has become important in today’s technological and military apparatus. Thus, we have seen that a large part of US foreign policy directives has been targeted around this specific point. What are REEs and why are they important? Rare earth minerals are a group...

New Delhi: China has launched live-fire military drills around Taiwan that simulates a blockade of major ports. Chinese coast guard vessels were also sent out to conduct “law enforcement inspections” at sea around Taiwan’s outer islands. What is the current action? The exercise was named Justice Mission 2025, and a spokesperson for the PLA’s eastern theatre command, Col Shi Yiwas, termed it as “a stern warning against ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces and external interference forces.” “It is a legitimate and necessary action to safeguard China’s sovereignty and national unity,” he further...

Why ‘Globalise the Intifada’ slogan is under scrutiny and why Australia, and other Western nations want to ban it

New Delhi: UK police have reportedly warned that people publicly chanting “globalize the intifada”, a purportedly pro- Palestine call, will be arrested. This comes as the “context had changed” after the recent antisemitic terror attack in Australia’s Bondi Beach. Some criticism of the move came swiftly, as many accused the police forces of London and the northwest English city of Manchester of political repression. What is behind the move? The move follows recent antisemitic attacks, including father-and-son gunmen killing 15 people last Sunday at a Hanukkah festival on the Sydney beach and an October attack on a Manchester synagogue on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. “We know communities are concerned about placards and chants such as ‘globalize the intifada, '” the U.K. capital’s Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester Police said in a joint statement. They further vowed to “be more assertive.” “Violent acts have taken place, the context has changed...

Why is Donald Trump reiterating his claims on Greenland, what likely fallouts can occur due to his insistence?

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has again voiced his intent on claiming Greenland as part of the United States, saying that they must “have” it for national security reasons. This time he has taken this demand a step further, appointing a special envoy, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, to “lead the charge” on advancing US interests in Greenland.  Trump described Greenland as “essential” to U.S. defence, insisting it is needed not for minerals but to counter the growing influence of China and Russia in the region. These comments have drawn sharp diplomatic protests from both Copenhagen and Nuuk.  Trump’s insistence on Greenland continues Trump’s fascination with Greenland is not new. During his first presidential term, he famously floated buying the island from Denmark, a proposal that was swiftly rejected by Danish leaders as “not for sale.”  Just weeks before his inauguration as the President of the United States for the second time, Donald Trump talked...
