'Parasocial' is Cambridge Dictionary Word of 2025, how it shows effect of internet culture on English?

New Delhi: The Cambridge Dictionary on Tuesday came out with its word of the year for 2025, “parasocial”. The word is defined as "involving or relating to a connection that someone feels between themselves and a famous person they do not know". A new addition The origin of the term dates back to 1956 when it was developed by two University of Chicago sociologists who based it on observing the behaviours of television viewers developing relationships with television personalities, viewing them as close friends or family. The phenomenon has only exacerbated with time, with social media influencing and artificial intelligence platforms taking the concept further.  New entrants to the Cambridge Dictionary also included words such as  "skibidi", "delulu" and "tradwife". The three were among "6,212 new words, phrases and meanings" included in the online dictionary over the past 12 months. Many of these new additions arrive out of internet culture and social media, which currently can...

Explained: What does the UNSC vote mean for Donald Trump's Gaza plan?

New Delhi: In the latest development in the Israel-Palestine conflict, the UN security council has endorsed Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza. This includes the deployment of an international stabilisation force and a possible path to a sovereign Palestinian state, two contentious issues for both sides. The resolution was passed by a vote of 13-0 with abstentions by China and Russia. The US envoy to the UN, Mike Waltz, told the council chamber that the step charted “a new course in the Middle East for Israelis and Palestinians and all the people of the region alike”. A new era for Israel-Palestine relations? Those in favour of the resolution said that now the peace deal should commence further, with lifting of remaining curbs on the flow of aid into Gaza being a priority. The creation of an international stabilisation force (ISF) in the region was another major point raised in the meeting. Something which would help in the possible “pathway to Palestinian self-determination...

Explained: What to expect from Saudi crown prince MBS's visit to the US?

New Delhi: The much-awaited visit of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammed bin Salman to the US is to take place on Tuesday. Popularly known as MBS, this would be the crown prince’s first visit to the White House since 2018, when the killing of Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi resulted in global outrage. The Crown Prince’s trip is being seen as highly symbolic, reclaiming his place on the international stage and continuing his good relations with US President Donald Trump. A new start for MBS It would be an understatement to say that Mohammed bin Salman is changing the political and cultural life of Saudi Arabia. From the kingdom’s tribal days to that as a giant oil producing superpower, it has been MBS who is currently taking the kingdom to the next chapter of its development. From the start, he framed his mission in bold terms. “Seventy percent of Saudis are under 30. We will not waste the next 30 years dealing with extremist ideas. We will destroy them today,” he declared in...

It was not just the capital, but many other cities also saw similar marches, which the government claims have been funded by opposition right-wing politicians. Major unrest in Mexico The protests were reportedly organised by Gen Z youth groups. The protesters claim they are protesting against high-profile killings, including the assassination just weeks ago of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, who had recently called for tough action against cartels. Many of the protesters have claimed to be dissatisfied with the way the government is dealing with the problem of the drug cartels. While action is being taken, they claim that unlike the previous governments there has been no all out war to dismantle the cartels. As part of...

Explained: What are the reasons for current heightened tensions between China and Japan?

New Delhi: Tensions between Japan and China have recently been extremely exaggerated. In the latest development, China has urged its citizens not to travel to Japan and summoned the country 's ambassador in Beijing. This comes at the back of an escalating war of words that started when Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested that Japan could respond with its own self-defence force if China attacked Taiwan. The rift is historic, only reigniting again. Part of which pertains to the longstanding "strategic ambiguity" on the sovereignty of self-governed Taiwan. Flashpoints ignite, tensions explode The start of the current tensions can be traced to a parliamentary meeting in Japan where the Prime Minister’s reply to a question from an opposition lawmaker regarding Taiwan caused a flurry. The Japanese Prime Minister said that such events can be seen as a survival-threatening situation for Japan. "If there are battleships and the use of force, no matter how you think about...

Explained: What changes is Britain making in its refuge policy and how it might affect foreign nationals?

New Delhi: In one of the biggest overhauls to the country’s asylum system, Britain is making massive changes in this regard. These reportedly include making refugee status temporary and increasing the wait for permanent settlement to 20 years. The Labour government says these changes are being made to tackle a "broken" system which has become unpopular with the country’s people. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood outlined these measures, saying, "We have a system that is out of control." She further added that, "It 's unfair, and it 's putting huge pressure on communities. It is important that we restore order and control to this system, so that we can retain public permission and public confidence in having an asylum system at all." Making major changes According to the new reforms, the "automatic path" to settlement after five years currently existing in the UK will end. Now the refugee status is expected to be reviewed every two-and-a-half years during a new 20-year...

NiMo factor prevails: The PM-CM ‘jodi’ works wonders again as popularity of duo looks set to win Bihar for NDA

New Delhi: Early trends of the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 are steadily coming in. While the 2020 Assembly elections in the state were a close call, if early trends are to be believed, the current elections see a clear winner. The NDA alliance is clearly leading the pack, with BJP and JDU, the two biggest members of the alliance looking poised to win big. The NDA currently is leading in 88 seats and the JDU in 79 seats, occupying the two top positions in the current tally of trends. Of their two main competitors, RJD stands only at 32 prospective seats while the Congress at a mere 4 seats.  The success of the 'NiMo ' factor The numbers speak for themselves, and a big reason for this huge wave of early numbers for the NDA can clearly be attributed to the charismatic duo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. While the 2020 Bihar Assembly Elections were a close contest, if early trends are anything to go by, this time around it looks like a...

Hype to hopeless: Dismal early trends for Prashant Kishore and Jan Suraaj, what went wrong?

New Delhi: Former political strategist Prashant Kishor or PK’s entry into active politics with his party Jan Suraaj caught many unawares. While with his stellar strategist career and time in the UN had many having high expectations from the new entrant in this year’s Bihar Assembly Elections, early trends pit him poorly. His party Jan Suraaj is getting only one seat till now according to the trends while the NDA is leading with 169 seats and the principal opposition Mahagthbandhan trailing them with 70. Going against high expectations Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party contested its maiden elections with more than 200 candidates in the fray in this year’s Bihar Assembly Elections. The poor non-existent early trends mirror the exit polls , which had predicted a similar poor performance from the Jan Suraaj Party, estimating that it would win up to only five seats. Kishor began his campaign on a high note, with the “Bihar Badlao Yatra” in which he promised systemic change to...
