Turbocharged cars are increasingly getting popular in India. Earlier, only diesel cars used to come with a turbocharger and the inefficiencies and cost of a turbo meant that petrol cars were usually naturally aspirated, especially entry-level ones. There are now an increasing number of turbo petrol cars in the market and that is because they offer brilliant performance and efficiency as well.
The trend started with certain cars obviously. The Ford Ecosport was the first to introduce a turbo petrol in a smallish car with the 1.0L Ecoboost engine but it was not popular at the time. The Hyundai Venue popularised it with the 1.0L T-Gdi engine more in the segment but we have combined a list of 5 turbo petrol cars that also come with a manual transmission and enthusiasts should consider it.
The Skoda Kylaq is pretty new in the segment. It features a 1.0L TSI turbo petrol engine which produces 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque. It is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. The Kylaq’s 1.0L TSI is a tested engine and quite a popular one for tuning. There are mods available for it globally and people have doubled the horsepower number easily since it already features some pretty sturdy internals. The 1.0L TSI has also proved to be pretty reliable in the long run.
The Hyundai i20 N Line is one of the best enthusiast cars for the money. It features a 1.0L T-GDI engine, which produces 118 bhp and 172 Nm of torque. Earlier, there was no manual transmission option, but Hyundai added a 6-speed manual with the facelift of the car. Not only does the i20 N Line have a more powerful engine but Hyundai also worked on the suspension which makes it quite communicative and a joy to drive on the daily.
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is often not recognised as an enthusiast machine but it is quite a fun vehicle with the 1.0L Boosterjet turbo petrol engine which produces 100 bhp and 147 Nm of torque. It is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission and there is a fair amount of tuning that one can do to this engine and it was earlier featured in the Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS as well. One thing that helps the car is its weight as the Fronx comes under a ton which is quite light.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO is one of the most powerful cars in its segment. It has two turbo petrol engine options but the 1.2L T-Gdi is the one to get. It produces 130 bhp and 230 Nm of torque. It is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. The XUV 3XO has very sorted dynamics, and is also loaded with a lot of features now.
The Altroz Racer is a brilliant vehicle when it comes to its dynamics. The ride is sorted and the new 1.2L turbo petrol engine should have been there from the first day itself. It produces 118 bhp and 170 Nm of torque. It is paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox and it looks like a proper hot thing with its stripes and bright colours. The Altroz Racer begs for the new T-gdi engine, though and we hope that Tata brings that engine to the Altroz with its facelift.
