Bengaluru: The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, long hailed as a jewel of Indian cricket, has been declared unfit for hosting large public events following a tragic crowd crush that claimed 11 lives during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) Indian Premier League (IPL) victory celebrations on June 4, earlier this year.

A damning report from a judicial inquiry, led by Justice John Michael D’Cunha and appointed by the Karnataka government, has revealed a host of serious safety failings. The investigation found that the stadium’s architectural design, especially the positioning of its main gates leading directly onto crowded footpaths, played a pivotal role in the deadly bottleneck.

With thousands of jubilant fans pouring in to celebrate RCB’s historic first IPL title, the lack of a structured crowd management plan quickly escalated into chaos.

The inquiry also pointed to a failure in basic logistical planning. With no collaboration in place with the city’s public transport providers and no clearly designated parking areas, the surrounding roads and pedestrian zones became dangerously overcrowded. Emergency preparedness was virtually non-existent, with no evacuation protocol or dispersal strategy to mitigate the unfolding crisis.

The state government has since initiated legal proceedings against those considered responsible. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), the RCB franchise, and DNA Entertainment Networks, the event organiser, are all facing formal investigations. In the wake of the tragedy, several senior police officials have been suspended for lapses in crowd control, and authorities are weighing charges of criminal negligence.

The consequences are already reshaping Karnataka’s cricketing landscape. The upcoming Maharaja Trophy T20 tournament will proceed without spectators, and Bengaluru’s ability to host matches in the forthcoming Women’s ODI World Cup is under serious review. Unless urgent upgrades are made, key fixtures may be relocated to alternative venues.

As scrutiny deepens, the future of the iconic stadium is now uncertain. Authorities are preparing to outline a series of structural and safety improvements required before the ground can once again welcome large-scale crowds.
