New Delhi: A senior real estate executive was found dead with a bullet injury at his central Bengaluru home on Friday, even as the Income Tax Department was carrying out searches at premises linked to his company, police officials said.
CJ Roy, 57, chairman of the Confident Group, was discovered injured at his bungalow in Langford Town, according to deputy commissioner of police (central) Akshay Hakay.
Roy was initially taken to a nearby private hospital and later shifted to the Narayana Hospital in HSR Layout, where doctors declared him “brought dead”. Police said the exact circumstances leading to his death remain unclear.
Investigators are examining whether Roy may have shot himself, police officials said, adding that all possibilities are being looked into. Details regarding the weapon involved and the sequence of events are yet to be established.
At the time of the incident, the Income Tax Department was conducting searches at multiple locations connected to the Confident Group, police confirmed. Officials said the searches were part of an ongoing tax investigation.
The Bengaluru-based developer has operations across several southern states, including Kerala. The group has earlier faced Income Tax Department searches and has been involved in long-running tax disputes, including assessment and appeal cases before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and the Karnataka High Court.
Roy, a native of Kochi in Kerala, also had ties to the Malayalam film industry. He produced films, including the 2012 Mohanlal-starrer “Casanova”, and the Confident Group had served as title sponsor for multiple seasons of the Malayalam television reality show “Bigg Boss Malayalam”, hosted by Mohanlal.
Police said further investigation is under way to determine the cause of death and the surrounding circumstances.
