New Delhi: Delhi woke up to its coldest morning of the winter season on Saturday with a biting chill gripping the city as the minimum temperature dropped to 4.2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in the city settled at 4.2 degrees Celsius, about 2.7 degrees Celsius below the seasonal normal, marking the coldest morning of the season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
“Overnight, the mercury dipped to 4.2 degrees, slightly lower than Friday’s minimum,” the IMD said, warning that cold day conditions are likely to persist at isolated places across Delhi-NCR, accompanied by moderate to dense fog during early morning and late-night hour.
Rain adds to winter woes
On Friday, the national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 4.6 degrees Celsius. Several places across the national capital also experienced light rainfall in the early hours of Friday. The surprise rainfall in Delhi and adjoining areas including Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad, brought the temperature down across the capital and neighbouring areas.
Saturday marked the fifth coldest morning of the season as the mercury at the city's base station Safdarjung dipped to 4.2 degrees Celsius. Delhi reported similar low temperatures on December 4 and 5, 2024, when the mercury fell to 5.6 degrees, and on December 1, 2025 when it dipped to 5.7 degrees.
According to the IMD, cold day conditions are declared when the minimum temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, and the maximum falls about 4.5 to 6.4 degrees below the normal.
Delhi-NCR braces for colder days
The IMD, in its All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin, said cold wave conditions are likely to persist over parts of north and northwest India, including Delhi-NCR, over the coming days. The weather department has, however, not predicted a severe cold wave yet.
Delhi airport advisory
As dense fog enveloped the city, flight operations were affected at the Delhi airport due to low visibility. The Delhi airport, in a travel advisory, said that several flights are likely to be delayed or cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. It also requested the passengers to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight information or visit its official website.
"Please be assured that our on-ground officials are available across all terminals to provide necessary support," the advisory read.
IndiGo also issued a similar advisory for its passengers, stating that flight schedules may change, and operations may be slower than usual as chilly winter air and fog enveloped Delhi and Hindon airports. The airline also said that its on-ground teams are prioritising safety and compliance with visibility requirements.
"Delhi and Hindon (Airport) continue to remain wrapped in chilly winter air and lingering fog this morning. The fluctuating visibility has led to changes in flight schedules, and operations may be slower than usual as conditions evolve," the airline said.
IndiGo also advised flyers to keep a tab on their flight status, adding that airport teams are also available to assist them if they need support while at the terminal.
"Once the weather settles, operations will gradually stabilise, and flights will depart as planned. Thank you for your patience and understanding. We look forward to welcoming you onboard soon," it said.
