New Delhi: Months after a bomb blast near Delhi's Red Fort rocked the national capital, CCTV cameras are set to be installed in the iconic monument for security and surveillance. According to officials, as many as 150 CCTV cameras inside the complex will be installed in the first phase.

As many as 15 people were killed and 20 others injured in the terror attack near the ASI-protected historical structure on November 10. A car, driven by suicide bomber Umar Mohammad alias Umar-un-Nabi, exploded in the middle of busy traffic near Red Fort.

An official privy to the matter said that the installment of the CCTV camera in the Red Fort Complex will be first such installment, HT reported. The complex has no CCTVs as the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) earlier objected to it.

The decision was reportedly taken after the Union Home Minister held several meetings with the officials of the Intelligence Bureau, ASI, Delhi Police, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

“As many as 150 CCTV cameras are being installed as part of the first phase. Red Fort complex did not have a single surveillance camera until now. The decision to install the camera was taken after ASI approved the proposal. It will also closely monitor the installation process,” an official aware of the matter told HT on the condition of anonymity.

Besides installing cameras, the authorities have also decided to step up security in and around the 17th-century structure by deploying additional police personnel at the entry gates and train parking attendants to identify unattended or unusual vehicles and promptly alert police.

On November 10, Umar Nabi entered the Sunehri Masjid parking lot in Chandni Chowk at 3:19 pm. He remained there for more than three 3 hours and left the parking lot around 6:30 pm, without stepping out, according to a footage.

Shortly after exiting the parking lot, the car moved towards Netaji Subhash Marg near Red Fort and detonated amid slow-moving evening traffic.
