New Delhi: Train services on the Delhi Metro’s Airport Express Line were regulated on Sunday after miscreants damaged nearly 800 metres of signalling cables in an attempted theft, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said.

Signalling disrupted, speeds cut

According to DMRC, the incident occurred in the midsection between Dhaula Kuan Metro Station and Shivaji Stadium station. Although the cables were cut, the thieves were unable to take them away, and the damaged cable pieces were later found near Metro Pillar Number-09 during inspection.

The damage disrupted the signalling system, forcing trains to operate at a restricted speed of 25 kmph on the affected stretch between Dhaula Kuan and Shivaji Stadium stations on the Up Line towards New Delhi. DMRC said normal train services are continuing on the rest of the Airport Express Line.

Repairs planned at night

Trains on the Airport Express Line usually run at an interval of 10 minutes. However, DMRC said replacing the damaged signalling cables during revenue hours would severely affect passenger services. To minimise inconvenience, restoration work will be carried out at night after the end of revenue service. Preparatory work for the repairs is already underway during the day, it added.

Passengers advised caution

DMRC said regular announcements are being made at stations and inside trains to keep passengers informed. Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly, as travel time on the affected section may be slightly longer.

The metro operator expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and said it is in touch with law enforcement agencies to address the recurring issue of cable thefts.
