New Delhi: In a major political setback for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, senior leader and former MLA Shoaib Iqbal has resigned from the party.
In a video message, Iqbal announced that he was stepping down from all posts and the party's primary membership. He said he was "deeply disappointed" with the party's ideology and functioning, which had compelled him to take this decision.
"I am resigning from the Aam Aadmi Party with great sadness. The party has failed to deliver on the promises it made to the people of Delhi," Iqbal said, adding that he had already sent his resignation and would no longer have any association with AAP.
Shoaib Iqbal's son, Aale Iqbal, is currently an MLA from AAP.
According to reports, the decision came after AAP announced its candidate for the upcoming municipal bypoll in the area without consulting either Shoaib Iqbal or his son. This reportedly angered the veteran leader, prompting his resignation.
Shoaib Iqbal has been elected MLA seven times from Delhi and is considered an influential figure in the city's politics.
