New Delhi: Mumbai’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) supply was severely affected after damage to the main pipeline was detected. The financial capital largely depends on autorickshaws and taxis—including those operated by companies such as Ola and Uber—as well as several public transport buses that run on CNG supplied by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL).

The Mahanagar gas utility on Sunday said it has "prioritised” supply to residential consumers to ensure that piped natural gas to homes remains uninterrupted. According to an official statement issued by the company, third-party damage was discovered in the main gas supply pipeline of GAIL (Gas Authority of India) inside the RCF (Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers) compound, due to which gas supply to MGL’s City Gate Station (CGS) at Wadala has been affected.

The damage has resulted in the halting of operations at CNG stations in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. The stations may not function properly due to the stoppage of gas supply to CGS Wadala and, consequently, the MGL pipeline network, the statement added.

No timeline yet for restoration

However, the company did not issue any specific timeline for resolving the problem. MGL advised its industrial and commercial customers in the affected areas to "switch to alternate fuel.”

"Gas supplies across MGL’s network will normalise once the damage is rectified and supply is restored to CGS Wadala,” the statement said, expressing regret for the inconvenience caused.
