Mumbai: Days after the BJP-led alliance won Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the wait continues for the next mayor of the city. Reservations for mayor's posts have been announced in Mumbai and 28 other municipalities in Maharashtra. Of them, 15 dears have been reserved for women in various municipalities across the state.

BJP won most seats in Mumbai

In Mumbai, the BJP won the largest number of seats with 89, with the Shiv Sena winning 29 seats. With the alliance crossing the 114 majority mark, the BJP + have regained their strength once again in BMC, delivering a crushing defeat to Thackeray brothers Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS.

Who are top contenders for the mayor’s post?

Ritu Tawade: The 53-year-old councillor from Ghatkopar (Ward Number 132) is the front-runner for the post. She won for the second time from the ward, which is a Gujarati majority area. A young Marathi face, she is considered a strong contender for the Mayor’s post.

Alka Kerkar: The 73-year-old councillor from Bandra-Khar-Santacruz West (Ward Number 98) has been elected for the fourth time. She has earlier served as a deputy mayor.

Tejasvi Ghosalkar: The 38-year-old councillor from Dahisal joined the BJO from Shiv Sena (UBT) recently. Winning by the margin of 10,755 votes, she is the daughter in law of former MLA Vinod Ghosalkar and the wife of the late Abhishek Ghosalkar.

Among other names that are also doing rounds are Sheetal Gambhir and Rajshree Shirwadkar. While Gambhir as a political experience needed for mayor’s post, Shirwadkar is also an experienced party worker in Mumbai.

BJP’s comfortable win in various cities

Apart from Mumbai, BJP + also won from othr important Pune, Thane, Nagpur and other areas.
