New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a professor was stabbed to death on a local train in Mumbai. The incident took place on Sunday evening, and new CCTV footage has surfaced showing the moment when the horrific crime took place.
According to the footage recorded at Malad station, the accused pulled out a knife after a sudden argument on the platform. He stabbed the professor before fleeing the scene. Scared commuters rushed out of the train as chaos ensued in the station.
The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Alok Kumar Singh, a professor of mathematics and statistics at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics. He was alighting from a Borivali-bound train at around 6 pm when the fatal attack on platform number 1 took place over an altercation that quickly escalated to a minor disagreement. Singh was rushed to Kandivali's Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital and was declared dead.
The accused, 27-year-old Omkar Shinde, is reportedly a daily-wage labourer. The police arrested him within 12 hours of the Kurar area. He was tracked down thanks to the CCTV footage and other points along the train route. There was another CCTV clip that showed a panic-stricken man wearing a white shirt and blue jeans crossing a foot overbridge at Malad station. The timing was just after the murder, and it gave investigators clarity about the incident.
The incident was reportedly witnessed by several passengers, and the investigators are recording their statements. Singh lived in Malad East with his wife and had been teaching at Narsee Monjee College since 2024.
As per his colleagues, who have been shocked by the incident, he was a calm and soft-spoken man. Shinde, who works as a metal polisher, has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are examining CCTV footage and investigating the weapon used in the attack.
