New Delhi: At least 12 people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after two armed men opened fire on a large crowd gathered for a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday. The event was attended by an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 people. According to local media reports, more than 50 rounds were fired, triggering panic along the beachfront as people ran for cover or rushed indoors to escape the gunfire.
In a dramatic moment captured on video, an unarmed civilian confronted one of the attackers and succeeded in subduing him. The 15-second clip, now widely circulated on social media, shows the man first taking cover behind parked vehicles before charging at the shooter from behind.
The footage shows the bystander seizing the gunman by the neck, disarming him and forcing him to the ground while pointing the rifle back at him. Eyewitnesses said the attacker had been hiding behind a tree before the intervention. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed sorrow over the incident, describing the scenes from Bondi as “shocking and distressing".
“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected. “I have just spoken to the AFP Commissioner and with the NSW Premier. We are working with the NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed. I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police," he said in a statement.
New South Wales Police confirmed the shooting, stating that ten people, including a man believed to be one of the gunmen, were killed. The second suspected shooter remains in critical condition. At least 11 others were injured, including two police officers.
In a post on X, police said they were “responding to a developing incident" at Bondi Beach and urged people to stay away from the area and seek shelter.
“Police are responding to a developing incident at Bondi Beach and are urging the public to avoid the area. Anyone at the scene should take shelter. Police are on scene and more information will be provided when it comes to hand," the post said.
