Dehradun: The Meteorological Centre has predicted rain and snowfall in several districts of Uttarakhand today and tomorrow. Mountain regions like Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh may receive light to moderate showers. Snowfall is likely in high-altitude areas above 3,000 meters.
Other districts including Bageshwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Almora, and Champawat may see very light rain or snowfall at isolated places. The rest of the state will remain dry.
Fog alert in the plains
While the mountains brace for rain and snow, the plains are facing dense fog. A yellow alert has been issued for fog in Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and nearby areas. Fog has already disrupted flights and train schedules in Dehradun. On Wednesday, two flights were delayed and some were cancelled due to poor visibility. Train timings were also affected.
December saw a dry spell
This winter, December remained unusually dry in Uttarakhand. Dehradun, which usually receives rainfall in December, did not record a single drop. The lack of rain pushed Dehradun’s air quality into the very poor category, with AQI reaching 329.
Rishikesh recorded moderate air quality with AQI at 136. The absence of rain has worsened pollution levels and caused discomfort due to dry cold.
Temperature in various cities
On Wednesday, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 13.4°C and a minimum of 9.7°C, making it a cold day. Udham Singh Nagar reported 15.4°C maximum and 10.8°C minimum. Mukteshwar recorded 19.4°C maximum and 5.9°C minimum, while New Tehri reported 16.8°C maximum and 6.6°C minimum. The drop in temperatures has increased the chill across the state.
Tourists should be prepared for cold conditions
The weather department has forecast cloudy skies in many districts for the next two days. Tourists visiting hill stations like Nainital, Almora, and Mussoorie should prepare for cold conditions and possible snowfall. Authorities have advised caution while travelling due to fog and slippery roads.
