Mumbai: The Bombay High Court stated that it would pass an ad-interim order to protect actor Akshay Kumar against the misuse of deepfake content after he filed a suit seeking protection for his personality rights. The suit was filed amid the increased use of deepfake content.
Senior advocate Dr Birendra Saraf, who appeared for Akshay Kumar, stated, "This is not just about him and his family but also about the public at large. Many times, damage may occur even before clarifications are issued.”
The suit filed by the actor sought to halt the misuse of his screen name "Akshay Kumar", his image, voice, likeness, mannerisms, and other identifiable attributes. It also asked the court to stop the unauthorised commercial exploitation of his personality.
Speaking of the issues caused by deep-fake content, the advocate stated, "These acts cause grave and irreparable harm to the plaintiff’s goodwill and reputation, dilute his personality and publicity rights, mislead the public, and amount to passing off, unfair competition, and unjust enrichment, thereby necessitating the present action."
The plea, filed through advocates Janay Jain, Monisha Mane Bhangale, Bijal Vora, and Chandragupta Patil, described various instances that caused the actor trouble.
They highlighted how a fake movie trailer was circulated in March 2025. The actor, who came to know of it later, was forced to issue a social media post to clarify he was not associated with it.
Another fake content showed the actor playing UP Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath. "This content has very serious consequences. It is not only a threat to him and his family but also to the public at large," added Saraf.
He also pointed out the existence of websites that can generate the actor's voice. “I am not seeking the closure of the website, but just protection of his attributes,” said the advocate. The lawyer also spoke of how there were fake accounts made under the actor's name and how some sold products using his name without consent.
