New Delhi: After a long and acclaimed journey from Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi to Raat Akeli Hai, Chitrangada Singh is now ready to tickle audiences with her first full-fledged comedy, Housefull 5.

The actress, known for her intense performances, gets candid about exploring different genres, working with varied actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Salman Khan, and the evolving space for female stars in Bollywood.

While talking to News9, Chitrangada says she wanted to “try a new genre” after doing serious projects like Khakee: The Bengal Chapter and Parikrama. Talking about her reason for taking up Housefull 5, she shares, “I hadn’t done a comedy before. The fact that Tarun Mansukhani wanted to cast Sajid Nadiadwala and me, he told me I was Tarun’s first choice to play Maya… I felt like it was something I could pull off. Physical comedy is very difficult. Making people cry is easy, but making them laugh is difficult.”

Calling the project a much-needed “detox”, she admits, “Before Housefull 5, I did Parikrama and then Raat Akeli Hai. I really wanted to try a new genre.”

Reflecting on her journey from Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi to now, Chitrangada says, “I got a lot of love for the limited work I’ve done. The film industry has been very kind. Female actors have a shorter shelf life… For me, to be able to come back and get work, I’m very grateful.”

Speaking on changing times, she observes, “Look at Kareena Kapoor Khan and Madhuri Dixit — they’re still headlining projects. It’s not about age anymore. If you’ve become a star early on in your career, it really helps.”

The actress also opens up on working with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Raat Akeli Hai. “He’s an amazing actor,” she says. “Their instinctive timing and rhythm — that unpredictability — makes them so exciting to watch.”

On Salman Khan, Chitrangada has only praise. “He’s an emotionally intelligent person… Despite being such a big star, he gives importance to everyone around him,” she says, calling him “an underrated actor” who brings the best out of his directors.
