New Delhi: When it comes to romantic films in Hindi cinema, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is one movie that instantly comes to mind. The much-celebrated film, directed by Aditya Chopra, continues to be loved by audiences of all age groups. While it is widely praised for the compelling performances of its star cast, did you know that a Hollywood superstar was initially considered for an important role in the film? Yes, you read that right. Well, let us enlighten you!

According to TV9Hindi, reports suggest that the 53-year-old filmmaker initially envisioned DDLJ as an Indo-American project. That is why he wanted to cast Hollywood legend Tom Cruise in the film. Aditya's idea was to structure the story in a way that a foreign boy travels to Punjab to win his love.

However, Tom Cruise's heavy fee turned out to be a major obstacle. Reportedly, he demanded USD 8 million for the movie. The amount was about 2.5 times more than Shah Rukh Khan's remuneration.

Another reason for the change in casting was Aditya's earlier experience working with a foreign actor in a film featuring Shashi Kapoor's son, which reportedly did not go well. Taking all factors into account, his father Yash Chopra advised him to rewrite the script. As a result, Shah Rukh was ultimately cast in the lead role.

Produced by Yash Raj Films, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge remains one of the most successful and iconic Indian films of all time, winning multiple accolades at various award functions.

The storyline of DDLJ revolves around two NRI youths who meet in Europe. But, when the girl moves to India for an arranged marriage, the boy realises his love for her and embarks on a journey to win her.
