While many rely on dark shooting locations, sound designs and visual effects, some are genuinely filmed in real-life spooky locations that added authenticity to the eerie narrative.

1. Raaz

Raaz, starring Bipasha Basu and Dino Morea, was shot in the Pine Forest of Ooty. Some parts of the film were also filmed at the Fern Hill Hotel in Ooty, which is said to be haunted. During the shoot, Bipasha Basu and the crew reportedly experienced unexplained noises and eerie events, adding mystery to the movie.

2. Haunted -3D

Vikram Bhatt's directorial, Haunted - 3D, was majorly shot in a large bungalow in Ooty and the cast and crew reportedly experienced spooky moments during the filming. In fact, locals suggested the crew to organise a ritual to keep evil energy away in a temple nearby. Some parts were also shot in the infamous Mukesh Mills in Mumbai, which has been associated with ghost stories.

Directed by Dilip Sood, Trip to Bhangarh is based on the Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan, a place known for its alleged haunted reputation. Some parts of the film were shot in Bhangarh Fort itself, which is considered one of the most haunted places in India. Due to its spooky reputation, entry is even prohibited after sunset.

Lupt starring Jaaved Jaaferi and Vijay Raaz, was shot in real-life haunted locations, Bhangarh Fort and Mukesh Mills. For those who are not aware, Mukesh Mills was originally a textile mill which was shut down after a fire in the 1980s, leaving behind a skeleton structure that has been associated with eerie occurrences.

5. Kanchana

The Tamil horror movie Kanchana, revolves around a young man who gets possessed by three spirits. It has been filmed in the deserted areas of Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad, which has been rumoured to be haunted for years. In fact, the deserted areas of the studio, where the movie was filmed, have reported ghost activities.

Anushka Sharma and Parambrata Chatterjee starrer Pari is filmed in Delhi's Angrasen Ki Baoli, which is believed to be haunted by spirits, adding eerie elements to the film. The movie was also shot in Chandan Nagar in Pune, which is known for its alleged haunting stories. It is believed that a young ghost girl who died in a house collapse is said to haunt the area, particularly after sunset.

7. Darna Zaroori Hai

The anthology horror film, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Mallika Sherawat, Suniel Shetty and Anil Kapoor, was partially filmed in Ramoji Film City, which is well-known for paranormal activities. Several crew members reportedly had eerie experiences while shooting for the film.

8. Tumbbad

Sohum Shah and Dhundiraj Prabhakar starrer Tumbbad was shot in abandoned and eerie villages in Maharashtra including Saswad and villages of Satara district. The film's visuals were heavily influenced by the real haunted folklore of the region.
