New Delhi: A palpable sense of unease gripped Tirupati on Monday as police and bomb disposal squads descended upon two hotels near the revered Kapila Theertham following a chilling email threat. The swift response, initiated upon receiving intelligence about suspicious emails sent to the Raj Park and Pai Viceroy hotels, ultimately concluded with the confirmation of a hoax.
While the immediate threat was neutralised, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent security concerns plaguing the pilgrimage town. Hotel managements at both establishments were questioned as part of the ongoing investigation to ascertain the origin of the malicious communications. Further details are eagerly awaited as authorities work to track down the perpetrators.
This marks the second such alarming incident in the region within a span of approximately three months, with the previous threat also targeting the same vicinity. The earlier scare, occurring in October, saw Tirupati police significantly bolster security measures in response to intelligence suggesting potential terrorist activities.
Reports at the time indicated warnings, purportedly originating from Pakistan's ISI and former LTTE cadres reportedly operating in Tamil Nadu, which alluded to the possibility of RDX explosives being detonated at four distinct locations across the city.
In response to those October warnings, authorities meticulously examined two suspicious emails that allegedly contained explicit threats. Bomb disposal squads were promptly deployed to assess the potential risks and ensure the safety of the public, particularly given the hints of a conspiracy involving explosive devices at key public and religious sites within Tirupati.
Security personnel conducted comprehensive searches across vital areas, including the RTC bus stand, Srinivasam, Vishnu Niwasam, Kapila Theertham itself, and the premises of the Govindarajula Swamy Temple. As a further precautionary measure, police also extended their inspections to the judges’ residential complex and adjacent court areas.
