Chandigarh mayor withdraws decision to shame people through drum beating for dumping garbage in open

The Mayor said that while Chandigarh used to be number one in cleanliness, but has fallen to second place in recent years.

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla on Wednesday said that the drum beating initiative at residences of those found guilty of throwing garbage outside , has been withdrawn for the time being.

She added that while similar campaigns are being run in other cities to discourage people from dumping their garbage outside, the Chandigarh public has not accepted the initiative. Observing that it was a very innovative idea, Babla pointed out that the initiative could have created awareness among the public. However, the decision to roll back the campaign was based on public feedback, she added.

The Mayor further said that while Chandigarh used to be number one in cleanliness, but has fallen to second place in recent years. "We will continue to raise awareness and work with the public to ensure Chandigarh regains its number one position in cleanliness," she said. She also accused the Congress of politicising the issue and called it unfortunate.

Littering has become a growing problem: Chandigarh Mayor

Earlier on Tuesday, speaking to IANS, she said, “Our city is beautiful, but littering has become a growing problem. Residents often complain that trash is thrown outside their homes. Considering this, we have taken a step to address the issue. Whenever a new initiative starts, there can be some teething problems. For example, in cities like Indore, which consistently rank high in cleanliness, they also faced similar challenges…"

Recently, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation announced that it would retain video evidence of garbage dumping. Later, the municipal corporation employees would take to garbage to the homes of the guilty. Not only would the video of the house be uploaded to social media, but music would also be played.
