New Delhi: In a cinematic twist, the Sonbhadra police have arrested a woman who allegedly duped over a dozen men by conducting fake weddings and fleeing with their valuables, leaving them bankrupt. The accused, identified as Rani Kumari, reportedly conned multiple men by pretending to marry them and then disappearing with their money and jewellery.
The case came to light after police apprehended Rani Kumari, her husband Ravi Ranjan Maurya, and her mother Maya, who were all part of the fraudulent gang. The arrests were made following a coordinated operation on November 6–7 by the Uttar Pradesh police.
During the raid, the police recovered Rs 9,500 in cash, gold and silver jewellery, and wedding attire believed to have been used in the staged ceremonies.
“On November 6–7, police cracked down on the gang, arresting Rani, her husband Ravi Ranjan Maurya, and her mother Maya. Authorities recovered stolen items including ₹9,500 in cash, gold and silver jewellery, and wedding clothes,” TOI quoted Sonbhadra SP Abhishek Verma as saying.
After arresting the trio, police nabbed another accomplice, Krishnanand Maurya, near the UP–Jharkhand border, based on the information provided by the main accused. Officers seized Rs 90,000 in cash and an SUV from his possession.
Upon interrogation, Myorpur police discovered that Krishnanand played a key role in planning the crimes. “He was involved in extorting money and valuables from unsuspecting families through fake marriages,” an official said.
According to investigators, Rani Kumari had staged multiple weddings and vanished soon after the ceremonies, escaping with lakhs of rupees in cash and jewellery each time. The case bears an uncanny resemblance to the Bollywood film Dolly Ki Doli, starring Sonam Kapoor, underscoring the adage that truth can indeed be stranger than fiction.
