UP: Eight months after Holi, FIR filed against three Balrampur cops for molesting woman constable

Despite a Vishakha Committee inquiry confirming harassment and the accused continuing to work at the station, no case was filed for months. It was only after a prolonged departmental investigation found the head constable and two constables prima facie guilty that the FIR was finally registered.

The complaint said the incident took place on March 5, 2025, during an official Holi function.

New Delhi: In a shocking case of alleged sexual harassment inside a police station, an FIR has been registered nearly eight months after a woman constable accused three colleagues of molesting her during a Holi celebration in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district.

The FIR was lodged only after a long-delayed departmental probe concluded that the accused, a head constable and two constables, were prima facie guilty. The initial Vishakha Committee inquiry had also confirmed harassment, yet no case was filed at the time, and the accused continued to serve at the station.

Allegations during Holi

According to the complaint, the incident took place on March 5, 2025, during an official Holi function. The 30-year-old constable said she stepped out for a brief period and returned around 11:45 am to collect a key from the women’s help desk. At that point, the three policemen allegedly intercepted her, chased her, groped her and forcefully applied colours while making obscene comments.

She managed to break free and informed the station in charge during the evening roll call. The woman also mentioned a prior incident where one of the accused had touched her inappropriately. She accepted his apology then and did not escalate the matter, but after the Holi incident she submitted a written complaint, which saw no action for months.

In the days following the alleged assault, the trio reportedly continued approaching her, worsening her distress. On November 16, she approached a senior officer and highlighted both the harassment and the prolonged delay in action.

Action after delay

A departmental investigation later upheld her allegations, leading to the suspension of all three policemen, who were attached to the BNS 74 unit tasked with cases of outraging modesty. The FIR was finally registered on November 26, bringing formal action nearly eight months after the alleged incident.
