First-year KIIT student found dead in hostel room, probe underway
Investigators are now trying to piece together what may have triggered the student's death, with officials looking into every possible angle. Forensic experts have already examined the hostel room for evidence, and police are recording statements from Rahul's classmates and other residents to gather more clarity on the events leading up to the incident.
New Delhi: A first-year BTech student at KIIT was discovered hanging in his hostel room, Bhubaneswar police said on Monday. The deceased, Rahul Yadav, hailed from Chhattisgarh and was pursuing Computer Science.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sonal Singh Parmar told PTI that the incident occurred on Sunday, after which personnel from the Infocity Police Station recovered the body. Rahul’s family members are travelling to Bhubaneswar, officials confirmed.
Police have launched an investigation and are examining all possible angles to determine what led to the student’s death. A forensic team inspected the hostel room for clues, while Rahul’s batchmates and hostel residents are being questioned for additional information.
Campus suicides rising
This is the third suspected suicide reported from the KIIT campus this year. A Nepalese student died on February 16, followed by another female student from Nepal on May 1, according to police sources.
Expressing serious concern, BJP MLA Saroj Padhi said repeated student deaths at KIIT were alarming. "We will urge the chief minister to take strict action against those responsible for the deaths of students at KIIT,” he said outside the Assembly.
