New Delhi: Two staff members of Sharda University have been arrested following the death by suicide of a second-year dental student who had alleged mental harassment and humiliation by the duo. The incident occurred late Friday night in the women's hostel on the campus. It has sparked massive protests in the campus.
The student, Jyoti Sharma from Gurugram, was pursuing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree. In her suicide note, recovered by police from her hostel room, she held two faculty members, identified as Mahinder and Shairy. She said in the letter that these people were responsible for her decision to take her life. She accused them of prolonged mental torment, saying, "They mentally harassed me. They humiliated me. I have been in stress because of them for a long time. I can’t live like this anymore.”
Based on the family's complaint and the note, police arrested both accused staff members. “The two staff members from the university management have been arrested based on the complaint lodged by the student’s family,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Sudhir Kumar. He confirmed that a forensic team had conducted a detailed inspection of the hostel room and collected evidence.
According to reports, the university has confirmed that both accused have been suspended. Meanwhile, the university issued a statement that a high-powered inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and to suggest any necessary institutional actions.
"The University is extending full cooperation to the statutory authorities carrying out their investigations," said the Director of Public Relations. "All necessary documents and access have been provided, and we remain committed to maintaining complete transparency," the Director added.
