Delhi school student suicide: Four teachers suspended after teen kills self

The family says the 16-year-old had spent almost a year facing constant scolding and harassment, and had even told teachers and counsellors that he was depressed and thinking about ending his life. Despite the parents repeatedly alerting the school, they claim no steps were taken to address the issue.

New Delhi: Four teachers at a private school in Delhi have been suspended after a Class 10 student died by suicide at a metro station, with the family alleging prolonged mental harassment by staff members.

According to the parents, the 16-year-old had been “scolded and troubled” for nearly a year and had repeatedly informed teachers and counsellors that he was feeling depressed and contemplating suicide. The family says their concerns were raised with the school earlier but no action was taken.

A suspension letter sent to each of the four teachers said, “This is to inform you that the school has been made aware of an FIR registered against you, bearing No. 336A Tis Hazari Court, dated 19th November 2025. The matter is currently under investigation by the appropriate authorities.” Hindustan Times reviewed copies of the letters.

The letter further said, “In view of the seriousness of the allegations the competent authority has decided to place you under suspension with immediate effect. You shall remain under suspension till the completion of the investigation and further orders from the competent authority.”

Police said the student jumped from the platform of Rajendra Place Metro Station at 2.34 pm on Tuesday. He was rushed to BLK Super Speciality Hospital but was declared dead.

Family alleges humiliation

On Thursday, the student’s parents and friends staged a protest outside the school in Ashok Palace, demanding strict action against the teachers named in the FIR and accountability from the administration.

Shaurya’s father, Pratik Patil, said his son had been upset for several months and often spoke about feeling humiliated at school. He recalled that “during a dance rehearsal, he slipped and fell. Instead of helping him, the teacher said, ‘Cry as much as you want, it doesn’t matter to me.’ Another teacher even pushed him once.” Patil said the family raised these issues, but the school did not act.

Shaurya’s friends also told the family that he had become quiet and visibly disturbed in recent weeks. They said he often mentioned being singled out and scolded in front of classmates, and he had stopped taking part in activities he once enjoyed.

Probe underway

On Wednesday, the 16-year-old jumped from Platform 2 of Rajendra Place Metro Station. Police found his bag, books and a handwritten suicide note at the spot.

Following the incident, Delhi Police filed an FIR and sent the note for forensic testing. Officers have started questioning the teachers named in the note and members of the school administration. The school has not released any official statement yet.

The family, now in their hometown in Sangli, said Shaurya had been under intense stress for nearly five months and that constant scolding, insults and alleged threats from teachers had pushed him into depression. They are demanding strict action against everyone responsible.

Police said the next steps will depend on the forensic report and the statements of those being questioned.
