What was the hijab row involving Bihar CM Nitish Kumar?

On December 15, a row erupted after CM Nitish Kumar tried to pull up the hijab of a woman during a government function. The CM was distributing appointment letters to newly recruited AYUSH doctors, when the incident happened.

The video showed Nitish Kumar handing over the appointment letter to Dr Nusrat Praveen and then trying to remove her hijab so that her face could be visible to the people present for the function, including the cameraperson. Defending the leader, the BJP claimed that the CM's act should be seen as "affection shown by a father towards a daughter."

However the act drew sharp criticism from the Opposition parties, like the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress. Nitish Kumar also faced flak from the common people soon after the video went viral.

However, the NDA continued to stand with Nitish Kumar. Firebrand BJP leader, Giriraj Singh said, "India is not an Islamic country and showing one's face is not objectionable." Dosen't one show one's face at the passport office or at the airport?, he added.

HAM(S) leader and Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi also defended the Bihar CM. He said that Nitish Kumar's intention was not bad and that he pulled the woman's veil out of "fatherly affection." He said that had he felt that the CM's intentions were not good, he too would have protested.
