While the national capital recorded its coldest day of the season, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted similar conditions on Wednesday as well. As per IMD, the maximum temperature in Delhi on Tuesday was 15.7 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was recorded at 7.6.
“Gradual fall in minimum temperatures likely by 2-3°C over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi during next 2 days and no significant change thereafter for next 5 days,” the IMD said on Tuesday. It added, “Dense to very dense fog conditions very likely to prevail in morning hours in some parts over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh during 07th-09th January and Dense fog in isolated pockets for the subsequent 4 days.”
The department, while predicting light rainfall or snowfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, added that temperatures were below 0 degree celsius in parts of Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. Similarly, temperatures were between 0 to 5 degrees Celsius in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and 5 to 10 degree celsius in parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Notably, due to the weather conditions in Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, the local administration imposed ban on trekking above 3,000 metres in the district. On Monday, Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir recorded the coldest place in the Union Territory with a minimum temperature of -8.6 degree celsius.
Also, there was light snowfall in higher areas of the Union Territory due to the week's weather disturbance. Among the places affected were the Mughal Road and the upper areas of the Ganderbal region.
