Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday accused the Centre of providing grants for the promotion of Hindi and Sanskrit while neglecting other Indian languages. He also urged people to oppose all those who are anti-Kanada,
Addressing a gathering in Bengaluru on the occasion of Karnataka Rajyotsava, he said that the Centre was imposing step-motherly treatment and imposing Hindi language. In his speech, the chief minister said that the mother tongue must be made the medium of instruction. He also felt that Hindi and English are weakening the talent of children in the state.
"Injustice is being done to the classical language Kannada by denying adequate funds for its growth. We have to oppose all those who are anti-Kannada," news agency PTI quoted him as saying.
He added, “Children of the developed nations think, learn, and dream in their mother tongue but here the situation is against it. English and Hindi are weakening the talent of our children. Hence, there is a need to bring laws to introduce the mother tongue as the medium of instruction. I emphasise that the Centre should pay heed in this direction.”
Every year, November 1 is celebrated as formation day by a number of states and Union Territories across the country. The celebrations are being done to celebrate their creation and reorganisation over the years. On this day, states like Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala were formed in 1956. Chhattisgarh, on the other hand, was created in 2000 after the state was carved out of Madhya Pradesh.
Apart from these states, the Union Territory of Puducherry also celebrates its liberation day on this day, to celebrate its transfer from French to Indian administration in the year 1954.
