New Delhi: A man from Karnataka has been arrested for allegedly helping a Bangladeshi woman cross into Tripura without any official documentation. The woman is reportedly his lover, whom he met on Instagram about eight months ago.
The Border Security Force (BSF), acting on a tip-off, detained the accused, Datta Yadav, along with the Bangladeshi woman at Kamthana on Thursday afternoon and later handed them over to the Tripura Police at Madhupur. The two were produced before a local court on Friday, which remanded them to judicial custody for the next 14 days.
The Bangladeshi woman has been identified as Gulshana Akhtar, who entered the Konaban Harihardula area of Tripura. A broker had helped her illegally cross the border. Gulshana had previously worked at a beauty parlour and a private firm in Mumbai and Bengaluru and had allegedly fallen in love with Yadav, a resident of Bidar district in Karnataka.
Police said that Yadav had travelled from Bengaluru to Tripura to meet his lover, Gulshana. However, their meeting was short-lived as they were spotted by BSF personnel and detained at the border. Both were taken to the Kamthana BSF camp and later handed over to Madhupur Police Station.
Initial investigation revealed that Yadav is already married and lives with his wife in Bengaluru. Despite knowing this, Akhtar left her family in Bangladesh and crossed the international border in hopes of a future with him.
Officials have filed specific cases under the Passports Act, the Foreigners Act, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Tripura Police, BSF, and other law enforcement agencies have intensified operations to crack down on human trafficking networks facilitating illegal infiltration from Bangladesh.
Apart from some unfenced patches, most of the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura has been barricaded to prevent smuggling, trans-border crimes and illegal infiltration.
