Fish bone found in liver removed through surgery at Kochi hospital
The foreign object was found during a scan conducted to determine the cause of the man's severe, two-week-long fever.
Kochi: In a major accomplishment, doctors at Rajagiri Hospital, a private hospital in Kochi discovered a fish bone lodged in the liver of a 36-year-old college lecturer from Perumbavoor who was being treated for symptoms of a persistent cough and fever.
The foreign object was found during a scan conducted to determine the cause of the man's severe, two-week-long fever.
The patient initially consulted Dr. Salini Baby John in the General Medicine department, assuming the illness was a common fever. Recognizing that the fever had continued for two weeks without a specific cause, Dr. Salini advised a PET scan.
During the abdominal examination, Dr. Vijay Harish Somasundaram and Dr. Vinayak of the Nuclear Medicine department identified a foreign object in the liver. It was subsequently removed through an emergency surgery led by Dr. Joseph George of the Gastro Surgery department at Rajagiri Hospital. The patient was unaware that the fish bone had accidentally entered his body while eating. He returned home after a two-day hospital stay following the successful surgery.
Dr. Salini Baby John, Senior Consultant in General Medicine, stated that the decision to conduct the PET scan was crucial, as it allowed them to detect the pus formation in the liver caused by the fish bone, which otherwise could have been life-threatening.
