Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju delivered a strong rebuke to Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge in the Rajya Sabha, urging him to uphold the dignity of the parliamentary chair. The confrontation arose during a "solemn occasion" after Kharge reportedly referred to a matter deemed unnecessary by Rijiju.
Rijiju specifically questioned Kharges decision to raise the particular issue, stating that if the LoP had not deviated from the subject, his intervention would not have been required.
The Minister reminded the Opposition, including Kharge and Chief Whip Jairam Ramesh, of their past actions. He highlighted the use of inappropriate language and a "removal motion" against a former Vice President and Chairman, actions which, according to Rijiju, severely tarnished the dignity of the chair.
He implied that the Congress party, having engaged in such conduct previously, should not now lecture on parliamentary decorum. Rijijus appeal was to avoid discussing extraneous matters during the ongoing session, emphasising respect in a democracy.
