New Delhi: In a shocking case reported from Maharashtra's Nagpur, a 12-year-old boy was reportedly chained by his parents, who wanted to correct his misbehaviour. They used iron chains and padlocks and tied him to a pole, reported NDTV. The parents, who work as daily wage labourers, would chain their son just before leaving for work in the morning.

According to the police, locals of the area intervened to save the boy. They informed authorities and immediately a team from the District Women and Child Development Office reached the spot, where they found the boy chained and with padlocks around his legs.

The officials found the boy injured. He had marks around his hands and legs due to the fact that he remained chained constantly. The parents had been tying him up repeatedly for the past 2 months, according to the family's neighbours.

Upon being asked the reason for their decision to tie up their kid, the parents claimed that he had become "extremely mischievous". They said that he had run away from home several times and also stole mobile phones. The parents claimed that at last after trying to amend his ways several times, they decided to chain his hands and legs and keep him confined.

Parents booked

The parents of the boy have now been booked under the Juvenile Justice Act. The child has meanwhile been moved to safe custody at the Child Welfare Committee. He is currently undergoing counselling.

According to doctors, the child has undergone severe physical and mental trauma. The locals claimed that they had informed the police twice earlier about the child's plight, seeking their intervention. But the police failed to act. Then the locals called up the child helpline number 1098. It was only after this, that the child was rescued by members of the CWC.

The welfare committee defined the treatment of the child as a serious violation of child rights. The boy was reportedly subjected to severe mental and physical torture, according to a preliminary investigation.

The Child Protection Unit appealed to the perople to inform them if they find any child abuse, harassment, child neglect or violence happening against any child, around them.
