New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has once again debunked another claim by US President Donald Trump. It was said on Thursday that no phone conversation took place between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump on Wednesday. On the contrary, Trump has claimed that Modi had assured him India would not buy oil from Russia anymore.

What did the MEA say on this?

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told the media, “On the question of whether there was a conversation or a telephone call between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump, I am not aware of any conversation yesterday between the two leaders."

Trump claimed on Wednesday that “Modi assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia. That’s a big step. Now we’ve got to get China to do the same thing." Notably, Jaiswal also said that India’s oil import policies are based on national interest and the needs of Indian consumers.

What did MEA say on the topic of buying oil?

Jaiswal said, “It has been our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario. Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective." He added that the focus of India remains on ensuring “stable energy prices and secured supplies, which includes broad-basing our energy sourcing and diversifying as appropriate to meet market conditions."

He also said that the current US government "has shown interest in deepening energy cooperation with India. Discussions are ongoing." Notably, Trump has repeatedly accused India of being one of the largest buyers of Russian oil along with China, fueling Moscow's war machine in Ukraine.
