New Delhi: The winter session of the Parliament is all set to begin today. The session will continue till December 19. While various bills are expected to be tabled in the Parliament, this session is likely to be stormy due to the ongoing SIR. The government is also expected to table new bills this season. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam will also table a bill for a new cess on tobacco and pan masala today.
The government will table the bills months after the new GST rates were announced to bring relief to the public. While prices of most of the products were decreased, apart from items like liquor, cigarettes, tobacco, and pan masala. Earlier, the government had announced that the compensation cess would only be for tobacco and pan masala. Tthe same was, however, withdrawn from all other products, which led to a lower levy for several products. Some products were moved into the 40% sin goods bracket.
Apart from the bill on a new cess for pan masala and tobacco, the government is also likely to table 13 other bills this session. Among them are - The Repealing and Amending Bill 2025 and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
Apart from the SIR, the Congress is also likely to attack the government over the fresh FIR filed against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case. It has already been called the case ‘politically motivated’ . The session will have 15 sittings.
Recently, a number of Union ministers met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss the floor strategy. The Opposition parties also met at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge ahead of the Parliament session. The government also held an all-party meeting ahead of the Parliament session.
After the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed confidence that both Houses of the Parliament will run smoothly. After the all-party meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, "The meeting was very good and very productive. I thank the floor leaders of all political parties. Everyone participated and presented their party's views.
