New Delhi: Sergio Gor took over as the new US Ambassador to India on Monday. On his first day at office, he emphasised upon the strong relationship between India and US and hinted that US President Donald Trump might visit the country soon. He also talked about the relationship between the leaders of the 2 countries.
The US Ambassador emphasised upon the strong bond between PM Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump. He said that this bond was built on a strong personal foundation.
He was quoted by news agencies as saying, "I have travelled all over the world with President Trump, and I can attest that his friendship with Prime Minister Modi is real." He added that the ties between the 2 countries are being anchored at the highest level.
He further said that "real friends might disagree but they solve their differences in the end."
He also described India as a "strategic partner" and said that he was here in India to deepen bilateral ties between the 2 countries (India and US). He said that his goal was to take the relationship between the 'world's oldest democracy' and the 'world's largest democracy' "to the next level" in multiple domains.
According to Gor, President Trump may soon visit India. He recalled a recent conversation he had with the US President, in which the latter spoke warmly about his last visit to India. He said that he hoped that President Trump would soon be visiting India and added that it might happen in the next year or two.
He joked that President Trump's habit of making late night phone calls might be helpful given the time difference between India and the US. He further said that India was a very important partner for the US. HIs exact words being, "No partner is more essential than India."
He emphasised that both the countries must work on mutual cooperation and become "true strategic partners". He said that the focus must be on building strength, leadership and mutual respect. He concluded by saying that the US was determined to complete the long pending trade deal with India.
