SC slams government over sale of liquor in tetra packs: Heres what apex court said

The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up state governments for allowing sale of liquor in tetra packs. They said that liquor in tetra packs can reach school -going children very easily and parents would fail to know what their children are consuming. The court said that the government was just concerned about the revenue that the sale of liquor generates and was not taking into consideration public health and not stopping sale of liquor in tetra packs.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday raised questions regarding sale of liquor in tetra packs. The bench asked if permission for such acts should even be given.They raised concerns over the practice, saying that such open sale of liquor would allow school children to easily access them. This the court felt would impact the health and minds of the children.

The Supreme Court pulled up state governments over the sale of liquor in tetra packs. They added that the state governments are playing with the people's health for revenue. The apex court expressed anger against these states.

The court said that instead of public health, the states are prioritising revenue. Expressing concern over sale of liquor in tetra packs, the bench said that liquor sold in tetra packs can easily reach children, and due to their deceptive packaging, parents may not even know what their children are consuming. They may not pay much attention to the packets, said the court.

During the trademark dispute hearing, the court took a tough stand against tetra packs of whisky being displayed for sale. The bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi was hearing the plea filed by John Distilleries against the Madras HC order. The High Court order was given in favour of Allied Blenders & Distillers, the company that makes Officer's Choice whiskey. According to this order, the John Distilleries' 'Original Choice' trademark was struck off the trademark register.
