Chennai/New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned actor-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay for questioning in connection with the September 2025 Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives. The agency has asked him to appear before its investigators in Delhi on January 12, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The summons comes amid high political activity and just days before the nationwide release of Vijay’s highly anticipated film 'Jana Nayagan' on January 9. Vijay is expected to travel to Delhi next week to comply with the order.
Case Background and Investigation
The CBI took over the probe into the tragic incident that occurred on September 27, 2025, during a TVK campaign rally in Veluchamipuram, Karur. A massive crowd surge led to a fatal crush, resulting in widespread outrage and demands for accountability.
Over the past three days, the CBI has questioned several TVK functionaries, including party general secretary Anand and administrators Adhav Arjuna and Nirmal Kumar, at its Delhi headquarters. Nirmal Kumar had earlier denied rumors of Vijay being summoned, calling them "false information," but the CBI has now formally issued the summons.
