The much-anticipated Kilambakkam railway station, a crucial infrastructure project designed to integrate with Chennai's massive suburban bus terminus and decongest city traffic, has missed its operational deadline. Despite work being in an advanced stage, the station, built at a cost of ₹20 crore, remains incomplete, with its opening now delayed beyond the expected January 2026 launch.
The new railway station is being constructed between Vandalur and Oorapakkam stations, directly opposite the Kilambakkam Bus Stand in Chengalpattu district. The strategic location is intended to provide seamless multi-modal connectivity for the thousands of passengers who use the bus stand daily, which was established to redirect all outstation buses away from Chennai's inner-city hubs. The station is expected to significantly ease the travel inconvenience for commuters heading to and from the bus terminus.
Recent updates on the project's status reveal that construction is progressing but is not yet finished. Key infrastructure is taking shape, with one of the three planned platforms already fully constructed. Work on the remaining two platforms is currently underway. While electric poles have been installed along the tracks and power lines have been connected, the crucial task of connecting the train power line is among the final works still pending. The station is also planned to include essential amenities such as a station manager's room, ticket counters, purified drinking water facilities, and comprehensive security infrastructure.
The project has experienced a series of postponements. Initially projected to be operational by August 2025, the deadline was later shifted to January 2026. With only a month remaining until January and several critical tasks still incomplete, authorities have indicated a further delay, disappointing the public which has been eagerly awaiting the station's opening.
