Thoothukudi: Marking a significant milestone in India's electric vehicle (EV) revolution, Vietnamese automaker VinFast today officially inaugurated its first Indian manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi. The sprawling 408-acre plant, which completed its journey from memorandum signing to production in a record 19 months, represents a $2 billion (₹16,000 crore) investment and positions Tamil Nadu firmly at the center of the country's EV ambitions.
The rapid transformation of the SIPCOT Industrial Park site in Sillathankulam stands as testament to both VinFast's operational efficiency and Tamil Nadu's business-friendly ecosystem. Following the signing of the MoU on January 6, 2024, the project gained immediate momentum with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laying the foundation stone on February 25, 2024. Construction crews worked round-the-clock to meet the aggressive timeline, with the first phase of the facility becoming operational by July 2025.
The plant's initial production capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year will focus on manufacturing VinFast's popular VF6 and VF7 electric SUV models, all bearing the distinctive 'Made in Thoothukudi' label. The facility is designed for scalable expansion, with potential to triple output to 150,000 vehicles annually as market demand grows.
Beyond its manufacturing capabilities, the VinFast plant is already energizing the local economy. The company recruited 200 skilled professionals in July 2025 as part of its first-phase hiring, with comprehensive training programs conducted in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government's 'Naan Mudhalvan' skill development initiative. At full operational capacity, the project is expected to generate between 3,000 to 3,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The strategic location near Thoothukudi Port provides VinFast with dual advantages – easy access to domestic markets across India and efficient export routes to key international markets in South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Industry analysts predict the facility will catalyze the development of a green industrial corridor in southern Tamil Nadu, attracting ancillary industries and technology partners to the region.
Chief Minister MK Stalin, speaking at the inauguration ceremony, emphasized the plant's broader significance: "This isn't just another automotive facility – it's a validation of Tamil Nadu's leadership in next-generation manufacturing and our commitment to sustainable industrial growth." The VinFast investment reinforces Tamil Nadu's position as India's premier automotive hub, joining existing operations from global majors like Hyundai, Nissan, and BYD.
As the first Thoothukudi-made VinFast vehicles rolled out today, industry observers are watching closely to see how this Vietnamese challenger will navigate India's competitive EV landscape. With its combination of global technology and local manufacturing, VinFast appears poised to make a significant impact on India's transition to electric mobility.
