India's largest amusement park, Wonderla Chennai, is officially set to open its doors to the public on December 2, marking a major addition to the entertainment and tourism landscape of Tamil Nadu. The park, a ₹611 crore project sprawling over 64 acres on Old Mahabalipuram Road, will be inaugurated a day earlier by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on December 1. This landmark project is the fifth amusement park from Wonderla Holidays and its first in Tamil Nadu.

A Decade of Tax Exemption and Major Job Creation

The development of Wonderla Chennai received significant support from the state government. Arun K. Chittilappally, Executive Chairman and Managing Director of Wonderla Holidays, confirmed that the Tamil Nadu government has granted the project an exemption from local government tax for a period of 10 years. This initiative is expected to be a major economic driver, generating over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs for the region.

The park is designed to host 6,500 visitors daily and boasts a total of 43 rides across thrill, family, kids, and water-based categories. Among its flagship attractions is "Tanjora," the first Bolliger & Mabillard inverted roller coaster in India. Another highlight is the "Spin Mill," the tallest spinning thrill ride in the country. For a panoramic view, the 540-meter-long Sky Rail offers stunning vistas of the surroundings from a height of 12 meters.

Chennai Wonderla Ticket Prices, Discounts, and Operational Hours

Ticket pricing has been strategically set to cater to a wide audience. General admission starts at ₹1,489 on weekdays and ₹1,779 on weekends. To promote digital bookings, a 10% discount is offered for online purchases. College students can avail a substantial 20% discount by presenting their ID cards. As an opening day special, a ticket will be available for ₹1,199 on December 2. The park will operate from 11 am to 7 pm on weekends, with additional discounts for children and senior citizens.

A Blend of Tamil Heritage and Modern Amenities

Reflecting the local culture, the park's design incorporates Tamil heritage, utilizing locally sourced stone and granite. The infrastructure is climate-responsive, featuring shaded areas, natural ventilation, and indigenous plants. Visitors can choose from eight different restaurants serving a mix of local delicacies like Dindigul Biryani and Chettinad Chicken, alongside international cuisine. Souvenir shops will offer Tamil cinema merchandise and local handicrafts, including Thanjavur and Marapachi dolls.

Facilities are comprehensive, including spacious locker rooms, first aid stations, childcare areas, disabled access, a 1,500-seat conference hall, and an 8,500 sq. ft. open-air event space. The park also emphasizes sustainability with a massive 37.5 crore litre rainwater harvesting tank and a 1,000 kW solar power installation. The company is also collaborating with the government to operate MTC bus services from various parts of the city for easy accessibility.
