New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who seemed to be having issues with his party leaders these days, praised the meeting between US President Donald Trump and newly-elected New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Both Trump and Mamdani exchanged barbs during the recent Mayoral elections.
Days after winning the election, the newly elected mayor visited the White House to meet the US President. During the meeting, both exchanged bonhomie and seemed to have buried their differences during the polls. Responding to the meeting, Tharoor took to X and wrote that this is how democracy should work. The former Union Minister observed that he would love to see more of such things in India.
“This is how democracy should work. Fight passionately for your point of view in elections, with no rhetorical holds barred. But once it’s over, & the people have spoken, learn to cooperate in the common interests of the nation you are both pledged to serve. I would love to see more of this in India — and am trying to do my part,” Tharoor wrote on X.
Taking to X, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla wrote that it was ‘a reminder to the Congress to put India first and not parivaar’. “Once again Shashi Tharoor reminds Congress to put India First, not Parivar. To behave democratically and not like sore losers. But will Rahul Gandhi get the message ? One more Fatwa loading against Shashi???”, Poonawalla wrote on X.
Earlier, after meeting Mamdani, Trump praised the NYC mayor, saying he was “confident” that the latter would do a “good job”. When a reporter asked Mamdani whether he would still call the US president a ‘fascist’, Trump said, ““That's okay, you can say it. It's easier than explaining it. I don't mind.”
