New Delhi: A team from the United Kingdom's (UK) Crown Prosecution Services (CPS) visited Delhi's Tihar jail recently. The visit was for inspection of the jail conditions, in view of India's ongoing efforts to secure the extradition of 2 high-profile fugitives, namely, Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi.

Prison officials at Tihar Jail were quoted by Network 18 as saying that the CPS delegation inspected Jail number 4, which houses first-time inmates and also high-profile criminals. The team also spoke to the prisoners housed in that jail, they added.

The CPS team was here to inspect the jail conditions. They reviewed the infrastructure and security arrangements at the jail, said a report in news agency ANI.

The visit comes in the aftermath of British courts raising concerns about the condition of Indian prisons in the past. The courts in the UK while reviewing the requests for extradition raised concerns about prison conditions in India and have been skeptical about sending back some high-profile figures, like Mallya and Nirav Modi. In response to that, India has assured the UK government that all prisoners extradited from the country will be kept in safe and lawful conditions. Not only that, the government also assured UK authorities that no prisoners will be interrogated using unlawful means.

Since 2024, India has made 178 pending extradition requests. Of these 20 cases are of fugitives based in the UK. Most of the extradition requests made are for individuals linked to financial fraud, arms deals and those involved in Khalistani extremist activities.

Foreign Secretary ikram Misri had said last month that India was working closely with the UK to bring back some wanted fugitives from that country. Among them are Vijay Mallya, who is accused of defaulting on bank loans worth over Rs 9,000 crore and Nirav Modi who defrauded Punjab National Bank of nearly Rs 13,800 crore.
